
Alec Anderson has been a partner of Conyers Dill & Pearman since 1991. He is Head of the Trust & Private Client Department, which includes responsibility for Codan Trust Company Limited, a licensed trust company affiliate of the firm. Alec’s specialist practice area is in trust law advice involving international private clients, trust companies, banks, insurance companies and entrepreneurs; advising trustees on their duties and liabilities, advising on corporate trust structures and on trust litigation matters.
Alec, who was born in Bermuda, graduated from the University of Virginia in 1980 with a BA in Foreign Affairs. He received his LLB from the London School of Economics in 1983, and was called to the Bar of England & Wales in 1984 (he does not currently practise in the UK). He was subsequently called to the Bermuda Bar, and to the New York State Bar in 1985.
In 1984, Alec worked at the London law firm of Macfarlanes where he concentrated on corporate and tax work. He joined Conyers Dill & Pearman as an associate in September 1985 and practised primarily in the corporate area for four years after which he specialised in trust law practice.
A frequent speaker at international Private Client conferences and a contributor to trade and legal publications, Alec is author of the Bermuda chapters of International Estate Planning (published by Matthew Bender, edited by Henry Christensen III), International Trust Precedents (published by Sweet & Maxwell) and International Charities (published by Wiley & Sons). He wrote a chapter on The Statutory Non-Charitable Purpose Trusts; Equity, Fiduciaries and Trusts (published by Carswell). He is the Bermuda editor of the legal publication Trusts and Trustees. Alec is Chairman of the Law Reform Sub-Committee on Trust
Law and is a member of Bermuda International Business Association’s Trust Law
Committee (a committee he chaired for over a decade). Alec is the first
international member of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel
(ACTEC) and is a member of ACTEC's International Membership Committee. Alec is also a member of both the Multinational Fiscal Association and The International Academy of Estate and Trust Law.
